Nikon would probably count as the most recognised name among all the brands of Binoculars in Australia. As a retailer, it is much easier to say, I would recommend this Nikon binoculars and instantly it is associated with Quality and Value. As opposed to, I would recommend the Bushnell (eh?). After which, I would spend 15 minutes explaining the history of Bushnell.
Nikon Asction EX Comes in Six different variations, 7×50 , 10×50 , 8×40 , 16×50 , 12×50 and 7×35. Each offer an outstanding bright image and great Field of View. They are all Porro Prism’s which means that Nikon offers them for outstanding value. This particular Nikon Action EX 10×50 Binoculars retails on OpticsCentral for $249.95. Considering generic OEM Waterproof and Fogproof ones retail for $150-$200 in Australia, the Nikon Action is definitely great value for money.
All Nikon Action EX Binoculars are equipped with rubber armouring for a comfortable grip and superior shock resistance. The Extreme series is unique to the standard Action series as they are Waterproof, and Fog-Proof as well. As expected, all lenses are fully multi-coated for superior light transmission.
First impressions are, I love the Field Of View. 114m @ 1000m is pretty impressive for 10x Magnification. I am so used to reviewing and looking through 42mm Lenses and Roof Prism Binoculars. I must say, it is really nice to hold a Solid Quality Porro Prism binoculars with a 50mm Lens.
Image quality is good, similar to most products in this price point. I guess having a 50mm Lens does make up for alot. Sharpness seems to be only evident in the centre and does fade off. Chromatic Aberration is evident due to the lack of ED Glass. However, in this price point, it is expected and I would still say they are great for the price.
My only complaint is that the Focus wheel does seem a little coarse but that could be because the review pair was brand new out of the box. It may loosen up over time.
What’s In The Box
The kit that comes in the box is fairly standard. Case, Strap, Binoculars and a multi-language instruction manual. Everything seems to be well built and the strap seems to be quite comfortable. Only issue is that the case is not dust proof. The top parts of the edges are exposed as it is a velcro styled case. Maybe it is time for Nikon to redesign their case a little.
